How to Hit Fairway Woods
Fairway Woods can significantly improve your game when you learn how to hit with them properly. The key to learn to use these clubs is mechanics and practice.
Here are some useful tips to begin with if you are learning to use fairway woods.
1. The swing mechanics are different to your long irons, though the distance may be similar. You do not want to take a divot as you would with your irons.
2. Set up is similar to driving. Line up your shoulders and feet slightly to the left of target line with your feet shoulder width apart. The ball should be forward, almost in line with your left foot (for righthanded golfers). Your arms should be extended and your back straight and knees flexed.
3. If you are unfortunate enough to be in the rough and decide to use a fairway wood carefully tap down the grass behind the ball (being extra careful not to touch the ball). This may help to clear away the grass between your club and the ball and is legal as long as you don’t touch or move the ball.

4. Always keep your head down and eyes on the ball (or behind it) until after contact. Turning your hips through the backswing and downswing will help create power.
5. When learning to hit fairway woods concentrate on hitting the ball cleanly and well. Trying to hit the ball hard will invariably result in dasaster. The loft of the club will lift the ball if used correctly.
6. Before you take a fairway wood out of your bag be sure it is the correct club to use for the situation you find yourself in. For instance if you are amongst trees it may be a much better option to use an iron. Playing a rescue shot onto the fairway can save you shots in the long run.
7. Spend some time at the driving range learning to hit the ball cleanly and accurately and also learn to judge what distance you can achieve. This will give you confidence in using your fairway woods on the course and when to use them.
When you learn how to hit fairway woods well it will improve your game making it more enjoyable for you.
